Braces and the Movies

Safe Snacks to Eat While You Watch Your Favorite Flick

It’s summer and we’re still sticking close to home these days. So, why not schedule a family movie night? It’s a great way to beat the heat and get caught up on some of Hollywood’s latest blockbuster movies. You can even watch new movies from the comfort of your couch these days!

One of the go-to movie snacks we all love to shovel into our mouths while watching Netflix or TV is buttery, delicious popcorn. However, this kind of movie snack doesn’t exactly work well with traditional metal braces. Don’t worry though, your friends at our Spring orthodontics office has got you covered with some yummy treats that won’t bust your braces.

First Things First: Let’s Talk Sugar

We all know that it’s important for your oral and overall health to limit sweets and keep your intake to a minimum — this is true for everyone from kids to grandparents. Sure, sugar tastes so good, but it’s really not so good for your teeth or even the rest of your body. (Remember: if your little one does have a sweet tooth it’s extremely important that you keep your kiddo’s smile healthy with regular visits to our pediatric dental office in Spring. Regular brushing and flossing at home is also key.)

Some of the worst sweets for children and teens with braces are:

  • Gummy worms
  • Bubblegum
  • Nachos
  • Gooey candy bars
  • Caramel chews
  • Hard candies

These foods can break braces or get caught in them leaving you picking at your teeth instead of making the most of your movie experience.

It’s a Snack Attack

Not everything is off-limits at the theater or at home. There are still plenty of delicious snacks that aren’t in danger of causing costly damage to your braces. It’s up to you as a parent to help your kids and teens make the right choices and eat healthy whenever possible. However, what’s a night at the movies without a little treat. Here are some good options to choose from if someone in your family wears braces or is undergoing orthodontic treatment:

  • Chocolates like M&Ms, Hershey bars, Kit Kats, and Reese’s Pieces
  • Soft, fresh-baked cookies
  • Ice cream or frozen yogurt
  • Soft pretzels, potato chips, cheese puffs
  • String cheese
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Fruit
  • Crackers
  • Pudding

All of these foods taste good and make for a great movie night snack. Keeping food out of your braces isn’t a problem when you choose Invisalign over traditional metal braces. No foods are off-limits because you can remove the BPA-free, custom plastic aligner when you eat and sleep.
