All About Orthodontics for Children and Teens
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have an orthodontic evaluation by the age of 7.
Early detection and treatment gives your child the edge – a much better chance for natural and normal development. By working with the natural growth instead of against it, we can prevent problems from becoming worse, and ensure your child a lifetime of healthy smiles!
Studies have shown that people who have straight teeth are more likely to smile more. This leads to a greater self esteem which may lead to a more fulfilling life.
Dr. Dai and Dr. Matthews use a variety of orthodontic appliances to help straighten and align your children’s teeth. The most familiar kind of braces are metal and wire. These silver braces are the tried and true workhorse of orthodontics.
Invisalign and Invisalign Teen are clear aligners which use a series of clear mouthpieces specifically designed to treat your child’s unique teeth and result in a beautiful smile. For more information, visit www.Invisalign.com
Dr. Dai or Dr. Matthews will discuss your child’s unique smile and ways to improve it, guiding you to the right decision on treatment type.
Right from the beginning, it’s easy to see that SureSmile is a revolutionary new process. We use 3-D images taken by a CT scan to build a computer model of your teeth. Next, Dr. Dai or Dr. Matthews will use SureSmile 3-D Treatment Planning Software to analyze the virtual model of your teeth and then plot precise individual tooth movements for the entire course of your child’s treatment.
Because your care is planned on the computer from the beginning, we can design archwires that work more efficiently from the start of treatment, which means fewer wire changes and adjustments. SureSmile robots custom bend space-age Shape Memory Alloy archwires exclusively for your treatment. The end result is more directed tooth movement that “shortens the distance” to the target position.

As a courtesy, Dr. Dai, Dr. Matthews and their staff offer an on-call service to all of our orthodontic patients. While you are undergoing orthodontic treatment, there could be times an emergency may arise. Enclosed in your orthodontic packet you will find a card that shows you how to take care of minor emergencies at home. Although occasionally, a major emergency may occur.
For Example, a wire or an appliance may break, or become unattached causing bleeding, pain, or swelling. When you call our main number, dial 0 to get an operator. The answering service will get you in contact with the assistant on-call. She will talk you through it over the phone, or if necessary, arrange a time to meet you at the office. It is not necessary to contact the office after hours for things such as:
- Separator out
- Bracket off
- Wire poking that can be remedied by wax
- Lost retainer
- Color tie off
- Normal soreness
If you experience any of these problems, you may contact the office on our next business day. Calls that warrant an office visit between the hours of 8pm-8am will be subject to a charge of $79-after hour visit.
