Tips to Protect Children’s Teeth During Illness

As parents, seeing our little ones under the weather can be stressful. Coughs, sniffles, and fevers are all part of childhood, but when illness strikes, oral health can sometimes fall by the wayside. However, taking steps to protect your child’s teeth during illness is crucial to prevent additional discomfort and potential complications. Here are some practical tips to keep those tiny smiles bright, even when your child isn’t feeling their best.

Understanding the Risks:

When your child is sick, their body is already working hard to fight off infection. This can make them less interested in brushing and flossing, which allows plaque and bacteria to build up on their teeth. This buildup, combined with increased sugar intake from comforting drinks and medications, can create an environment ripe for cavities.

Prioritizing Oral Care:

Even when your child feels crummy, maintaining good oral hygiene is essential. Here’s how you can adapt your routine:

  • Brushing: Stick to a twice-a-day brushing routine, even if it needs to be shortened. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste appropriate for your child’s age. If your child is too weak or nauseous to brush themselves, gently help them or use a finger brush.

Tip: Make brushing time fun by playing a 2-minute song to ensure they brush for the recommended time.

  • Flossing: Flossing once a day remains important, but you might need to adjust the technique. Use a gentle, spongy floss or a pre-threaded flosser to clean between teeth.

Tip: For older children, consider teaching them to floss independently even if you need to supervise initially.

Dietary Adjustments:

During illness, sugary drinks and processed foods become tempting comfort options. However, limiting these can significantly benefit your child’s oral health and overall well-being:

  • Offer Water Frequently: Staying hydrated is crucial, and water is the best choice. It not only helps fight dehydration but also washes away sugary residues.
  • Choose Bland, Soft Foods: If your child has a sore throat or mouth ulcers, opt for soft, bland foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, or applesauce. These are easier to swallow and won’t irritate sensitive areas.
  • Limit Sugary Drinks and Snacks: Sugary drinks and processed snacks create an acidic environment that promotes cavity formation. Offer diluted fruit juice or opt for natural alternatives like fruit slices instead of sugary candies.

Addressing Specific Concerns:

Certain illnesses come with additional oral care considerations:

  • Vomiting: After vomiting, wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your child’s teeth. The acid from vomit can soften tooth enamel, and brushing too soon can further damage it. Instead, rinse their mouth with water or a mild baking soda solution.
  • Fever: High fevers can cause dehydration, leading to dry mouth. Offer frequent sips of water or use a cool mist humidifier to ease dryness.
  • Mouth Sores: If your child has mouth sores, choose a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle toothpaste to avoid further irritation. Encourage them to rinse with a cool saltwater solution for relief.

Consulting a Pediatric Dentist:

If you have concerns about your child’s oral health during illness or their ability to tolerate regular brushing, consult a pediatric dentist. Pediatric dentists are specially trained to treat children and can provide guidance on maintaining oral hygiene during difficult times.

Remember:

Keeping your child’s teeth healthy during illness is a collaborative effort. By adapting your routine, making smart dietary choices, and seeking guidance from a pediatric dentist when needed, you can ensure your child’s smile stays bright and healthy, even when they’re feeling under the weather.
